You've just asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews the same question your buyers ask. Who should we use for this service, in this town, with this budget. Your competitors appear. You don't. Or worse, you appear with an old service description and a phone number you stopped using years ago.

Why AI Recommendations Matter

That moment is now familiar to UK marketing managers. You test a supplier shortlist prompt on Monday morning, get one set of names from ChatGPT, another from Gemini, and a summary with different links in Google AI Overviews. None of the answers looks like a traditional results page, and none gives you a neat position to report.

The audience behind those prompts is no longer marginal. Ofcom research on UK generative AI adoption reported that 54% of UK adults aged 16 and over used a generative-AI tool in late 2025, up from 31% in 2024 and 23% in 2023. Younger buyers in particular aren't waiting for your media plan to catch up.

A Mention Is Only the Start

Learning how to get recommended by ChatGPT matters, but a mention isn't a sale. A buyer who sees your name will usually open Google, scan reviews, visit your site and compare you with the other names in the answer. If your services don't match the prompt, your location looks vague, or your reviews contradict the claim, the recommendation dies during verification.

That's the commercial difference between visibility and readiness. Visibility means an AI tool can name you. Readiness means a person can quickly confirm what you do, who it's for, where you operate and why other customers trusted you.

Build for the enquiry after the answer, not just for the answer itself.

No tactic guarantees inclusion. Answers change with the question, the user's context and the sources available at that moment. What you can control is whether accurate information about your business exists in public, whether it agrees with itself, and whether independent sources support it. For businesses already spending seriously on ads, that's a practical brief, not a new vanity metric.

How AI Tools Choose Businesses

Think of a good assistant behind a trade counter. You describe the job, the deadline and the area. A helpful assistant doesn't recite every supplier in the building. They name businesses they can identify clearly, match to your requirements and defend if you ask why.

AI recommendation works best as a mental model in the same way. The system needs to identify the entity, understand the service, place it in the right geography or audience, and find material that supports including it in a useful answer.

From Conversation to Web Grounded Answers

The shift became concrete when OpenAI introduced ChatGPT search on 31 October 2024, and stated on 5 February 2025 that it was available to everyone in regions where ChatGPT was available, allowing the system to retrieve and cite current web information. Gemini and Google AI Overviews differ in product design, but the practical lesson for businesses is similar. Public, current information matters more than polished copy hidden on one page.

Retrieval isn't the same as recommendation. A page can be found and still give an assistant nothing solid to say. Compare these two claims:

  • Weak: We deliver growth solutions for ambitious brands.
  • Stronger: We manage Google Ads and Shopping campaigns for UK ecommerce retailers, including feed optimisation and conversion tracking.

The second version gives a system and a buyer something testable. Service, platform, audience and task are all visible. Add corroboration from reviews, directories, trade coverage or a credible comparison article, and the claim becomes easier to support.

What You Cannot Control

You can't set a fixed rank, submit a guaranteed entry or force the same answer for every user. Prompts that mention price sensitivity, location, company size or a specific platform should produce different shortlists. If they don't, the answer probably isn't very useful.

Being understandable and defensible is therefore the goal. Make the entity unambiguous, state services plainly, keep evidence current, and let other reputable sources describe you in compatible terms.

Make Your Website Eligible for AI Search

Start with eligibility before you rewrite a single headline. If crawlers can't reach your important pages, your content strategy is built on a locked door.

OpenAI's ChatGPT Search publisher guidance states that public websites can appear in ChatGPT Search, but publishers should allow the OAI-SearchBot crawler to access relevant pages. Blocking it can prevent content from being discovered, summarised, cited or linked.

The flowchart below sets out the crawl audit in the order you should run it.

A flowchart showing four steps to perform a website crawl audit for SEO and search engine indexing.

Run the Access Checks

  • Review robots.txt: Check for broad disallow rules, old staging rules and user-agent blocks that catch AI crawlers by accident.
  • Test CDN and firewall rules: Bot protection, rate limits and geographic restrictions often block legitimate crawlers even when robots.txt looks clean.
  • Inspect server logs: Confirm key pages return successful responses and that crawlers aren't being challenged or redirected into dead ends.
  • Check rendering and access: Core service content shouldn't require a login, and it shouldn't depend entirely on JavaScript where a server rendered version is feasible.

Use noindex deliberately. Thin thank-you pages, internal search results and obsolete campaign pages may not belong in search. Your main service pages, sector pages, location information and substantive guidance normally should be indexable.

Check Each Important Page

Open the pages you'd want cited and read only the headings first. Can a stranger tell what the service is, who it suits and what happens next. If not, fix the structure before adding more copy.

Then check that claims sit near evidence. Qualifications, process, platforms supported and service scope should be visible on the page, not buried in a PDF or an image. Link related service, case study and FAQ pages internally so crawlers and buyers can follow the logic without guessing.

Build a Consistent Business Entity

A messy filing cabinet creates the same problem online. One folder uses your trading name, another uses an abbreviation, a third has an old address, and the phone number on top belongs to a previous office. A human might eventually work it out. A system building confidence in a recommendation has less reason to try.

The photograph below is a useful reminder of what scattered business information looks like before an entity clean up.

An open metal file cabinet drawer overflowing with cluttered documents, manila folders, and disorganized paperwork in office.

Audit the Core Record

Create one master record for your legal or trading name, address or service area, telephone number, website, opening information and core service descriptions. Compare it with your website, Google Business Profile, review platforms, Clutch and other relevant directories, and trade body listings.

Google's Places documentation on prominence and proximity says result ordering normally considers prominence within the supplied geographic radius and can alternatively prioritise proximity. That isn't a ChatGPT formula, but it confirms that discovery systems use structured location and prominence signals rather than trusting a single self description.

For location and service area work, treat your local presence and profile consistency as part of the same audit rather than a separate local campaign.

Fix Variations Without Creating Duplicates

Correct misspellings, remove closed locations and replace outdated service lists. Don't copy the same generic paragraph into every directory. Each profile should be specific about audience, services and geography while keeping the underlying facts identical.

Multi-location businesses need the opposite discipline. Keep legitimate locations distinct, with their own accurate contact details and services, but use one naming convention. Don't invent virtual offices or town pages for places you don't serve. That creates confusion for buyers and gives an AI system conflicting material to reconcile.

Earn Reviews and Independent Coverage

Your own website can explain you. It can't independently vouch for you. That distinction becomes decisive when a buyer leaves an AI answer and starts checking whether the recommendation deserves trust.

The pyramid below shows how the evidence layers build on each other.

Reviews carry commercial weight beyond AI visibility. The Competition and Markets Authority review research reported that 54% of UK adults read online reviews and estimated that reviews influenced approximately £23 billion of UK consumer spending annually.

Collect Reviews You Can Stand Behind

Ask genuine customers at a natural point after delivery. Point them to the platforms your buyers use, such as Google, Trustpilot or a sector directory. Don't offer incentives for positive wording, don't filter out unhappy customers, and don't write the review for them.

Useful reviews name the service received, the type of business and the problem solved. A short case narrative on your own site can support that evidence, and this guide to structuring a credible client case study shows how to present context and outcomes without turning proof into hype.

The video below is worth reviewing alongside your current profiles, because it helps you compare what you claim with what a buyer finds elsewhere.

Treat Best Of Coverage Carefully

Clutch profiles, trade publications and credible best of articles can corroborate a shortlist place. They help most when the selection criteria are explicit, commercial relationships are disclosed and claims link back to evidence. Paying for an undisclosed ranking or accepting a fabricated award does the opposite.

Audit existing coverage quarterly. Request factual corrections where services, locations or credentials have changed. If a comparison page describes a service you no longer offer, fix that before chasing new mentions.

Create Pages AI Can Understand

A strong service page reads like a clear answer to a buying question. A weak one reads like a brochure that avoids saying anything checkable.

Weak page pattern Stronger page pattern Why it helps
Innovative solutions for growth Google Ads management for UK lead generation businesses Names the service, channel and audience
Trusted by leading brands Named credentials, dated guidance and linked customer evidence Gives buyers material they can verify
Contact us to learn more Process, deliverables, reporting and next step explained Supports comparison against alternatives
FAQ written around keywords FAQ answering real cost, timing and suitability questions Matches the questions buyers ask AI tools

Structure matters because people scan before they commit. Clear page headers that describe the content below them help readers and crawlers understand where the service definition ends and the evidence begins.

Use FAQs and Schema Honestly

Add FAQs when sales calls, support tickets or search queries show real uncertainty. Good questions cover suitability, onboarding, measurement, service boundaries and what information you need from the client. Don't hide FAQ text, don't repeat the same answer across every page, and don't treat schema as a shortcut.

Google's guidance on AI features in Search says there's no need for new machine-readable files or special schema.org structured data solely to appear in AI features, and that structured data must match visible page text. Use Organisation, Service, FAQPage or Review markup only where it accurately describes what visitors can see.

Then build a page inventory. Mark each important page for thin content, unsupported claims, missing audience, missing location and stale evidence. Rewrite the pages closest to revenue first. A smaller set of specific pages will usually serve AI search better than a large set of interchangeable service descriptions.

Measure AI Visibility and PPC Impact

AI discovery doesn't remove the need for PPC discipline. It makes weak measurement easier to spot, because a buyer may first hear your name in ChatGPT, then click a branded ad, read reviews, return directly and enquire days later.

The demand context is real. Capgemini's consumer research on generative AI shopping found that 58% of respondents had replaced traditional search engines with generative-AI tools for product or service recommendations, while Deloitte reported that 52% of people had seen an AI-generated web-search summary.

Start With a Proper PPC Audit

A PPC audit is a structured review of account structure, conversion tracking, search term and spending patterns, landing pages, feeds where relevant, conversion goals and missed opportunities. For a business spending more than £5,000 per month, that audit should show where budget is wasted and whether the data behind optimisation decisions can be trusted.

This analysis of AI Overviews and the future of paid search is useful context when you plan how paid and AI assisted discovery will sit together.

Build a measurement loop around assisted paths:

  • Segment ChatGPT referrals: Use the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter to isolate sessions, landing pages and conversions in analytics.
  • Track prompt visibility: Record branded and non-branded prompts, whether you appear, which page is cited and which competitors are named.
  • Watch verification signals: Monitor branded search demand, review profile visits, direct traffic and repeat visits after visibility changes.
  • Ask in the CRM: Add a plain source question to enquiry forms and sales calls, then compare lead quality rather than counting mentions alone.

PPC Geeks is one option for this kind of work, providing account analysis, conversion tracking and optimisation focused on reducing wasted spend. Whoever runs the audit, insist on the same standard. Don't claim every later sale was caused by an AI mention, and don't ignore AI referrals because they rarely close on the first click.

Measurement rule: Treat AI visibility as an assisted influence until your analytics, CRM and branded demand data support a stronger claim.

Build Your AI Visibility Checklist

Work in priority order. Fix identification and access first, then improve evidence, then measure whether better visibility produces better enquiries.

The action plan below condenses the sequence into a working checklist.

A five-step AI visibility action plan infographic outlining strategies for improving brand presence in AI search.

Your Priority Sequence

  1. Confirm the entity: Lock one name, address or service area, phone number, website and service list, then align your website and profiles.
  2. Inspect crawl access: Check robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules, server logs, indexation and rendering for every revenue-critical page.
  3. Rewrite service pages: State offering, audience, location, process, evidence and next action in plain language under descriptive headings.
  4. Add genuine FAQs and validate schema: Answer real buying questions and ensure structured data matches visible text.
  5. Strengthen third-party proof: Complete Clutch and relevant directory profiles, collect authentic reviews and correct outdated comparison coverage.
  6. Measure the verification journey: Track prompts, cited pages, AI referrals, branded demand, review traffic and enquiry quality in one monthly view.

That final step matters because buyers rarely accept an answer unchecked. Reported UK research on verifying AI recommendations found that 79% of consumers said they would verify an AI recommendation, most commonly through Google or another search engine at 46% and online reviews at 43%.

The objective isn't to trick an AI tool into naming you. It's to earn a recommendation that survives everything the buyer checks next.

If you want specialist support turning that checklist into crawl, content and measurement work, review the AI Search Optimisation service and compare its scope against the gaps in your own audit before you brief anyone.

If AI tools are naming competitors while your paid campaigns carry the cost of demand you should already own, PPC Geeks can audit your tracking, landing pages and AI search readiness as one connected problem. Visit the site to request a review and get a practical plan for reducing wasted spend while making your brand easier to recommend and verify.
