Key takeaways

  • Google is auto-upgrading eligible Search campaigns using ACA or campaign-level broad match into AI Max Search.
  • The main risk is query drift, where extra matching freedom spends budget on searches that were never meant to be targeted.
  • Creative control changes because text customisation uses your landing pages and site content as inputs for ad copy.
  • UK advertisers should audit campaign eligibility, conversion goals, search terms, negatives and landing page messaging before the upgrade.
  • AI Max Search rewards clean tracking and clear commercial segmentation. Weak signals make automation more expensive.

AI Max for Search is an upgraded Search campaign type that gives Google more room to match queries, tailor ad text and expand reach beyond your literal keywords. It is no longer a feature UK advertisers can leave in the testing pile. From 1 September, Google is moving eligible Search campaigns into the AI Max framework wherever Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match are already active, which means account settings you thought were stable are about to sit inside a more automated system.

The risk is not that Google has invented automation. The risk is that many advertisers already have loose query control, thin conversion tracking and creative assets that were never written for this level of machine expansion. If you have not read our earlier view on what billions of new AI Max queries mean, the point is simple: more matching freedom turns weak account hygiene into spend leakage faster.

Treat this as an audit trigger, not a background platform change. Before the upgrade lands, you need to know which campaigns qualify, which features will switch on, and where Google will get more room to assemble ads and match searches without a human pressing approve.

What has actually changed in AI Max Search

Google is auto-upgrading eligible Search campaigns to AI Max for Search campaigns from 1 September. The affected campaigns are those already using Automatically Created Assets, known as ACA, and those using the campaign-level broad match setting.

The upgrade is not identical for every campaign. Campaigns using ACA move across with search term matching and text customisation enabled. Campaigns using campaign-level broad match move across with search term matching enabled. Google says the settings are designed to mirror current campaign behaviour as closely as it can, but the framework underneath is changing.

That distinction matters. Advertisers who opted into ACA for ad copy help did not always intend to give Google more query matching freedom. Advertisers who enabled campaign-level broad match often did so for reach, not for broader creative assembly. AI Max Search brings those controls into one automation layer, which makes old setup decisions more commercially important.

Why the upgrade matters for your budget

The money moves through query matching first. Search term matching gives Google more scope to find relevant searches beyond the literal keywords in the account. When conversion data is clean and the account is tightly structured, that expansion finds new demand. When the account has mixed intent, poor negatives or inflated conversion actions, the same expansion funds irrelevant clicks and teaches Smart Bidding the wrong lesson.

Here is the mechanism. A campaign with broad match and Target CPA already lets Google test wider search terms. Add a broader matching layer on top and the system reads landing page content, historical conversions, creative signals and user behaviour to decide where to show. Bad signals do not stay contained. They spread into auction eligibility.

Creative control changes too. Automatically Created Assets use site and ad content to generate copy. Under AI Max, text customisation becomes part of the upgraded setup for ACA campaigns. So your landing page phrasing, product positioning and service claims matter more than the ad group copy sitting in the interface. If your website says five different things about the same offer, your ads inherit that confusion.

This is where reporting gets messy. A campaign can look flat at headline level whilst the mix underneath has shifted. Brand terms hold conversion rate steady. A few high-intent non-brand terms still perform. New AI-matched searches quietly consume budget. CPA drifts up, impression volume rises, and the first internal reaction is usually to blame bids. The real issue is expansion without enough guardrails.

Our work on the metrics that actually drive PPC growth keeps returning to the same finding: in the accounts we take over, a meaningful share of Search spend is already going to terms that convert nothing or cost far more than the account average. Giving the system more freedom before you fix that does not shrink the problem. Automation does not forgive weak tracking. It prices it in.

The trap most advertisers will walk into

The specific problem advertisers will face is query drift hiding inside familiar campaigns. The campaign name stays the same. The bid strategy stays the same. The monthly report still says Search. Yet the system has more permission to match searches and tailor copy than it had before the upgrade.

We see this most often in lead-gen accounts running broad match with Smart Bidding and a conversion setup that counts every form fill equally. A qualified B2B enquiry, a student research request and a low-value local lead all fire the same conversion. AI Max Search then optimises towards the easiest conversion path, not the one sales actually wants. The account posts more conversions on paper and weaker revenue in the CRM.

PPC Geeks’ View

Google is reducing the gap between keyword targeting and intent modelling. Advertisers who do not clean up conversion quality before AI Max Search expands will pay for Google’s learning period with their own budget.

The immediate takeaway is to separate campaigns by commercial intent before the upgrade, not after performance drops. High-value lead campaigns need different conversion actions, negatives and landing page messaging from low-value enquiry campaigns. Ecommerce accounts need product margin and revenue quality feeding the strategy, not just purchase count.

This is exactly the type of issue we look for in a free Google Ads audit, especially where automation, tracking or campaign structure is already affecting performance. If your account has not had a proper query and conversion review since ACA or broad match was switched on, the AI Max upgrade gives you the deadline.

There is also a management point. A Google Ads agency should not simply accept the upgrade email and move on. The job is to map what changes, test the live output, and prove that the extra reach is producing better commercial outcomes. If it cannot be measured against sales quality, it is not controlled.

For tracking, the accounts most exposed are the ones already struggling to reconcile Google Ads, GA4 and CRM data. Our guide to GA4 campaign diagnostics and hidden tracking costs explains why weak identifiers and broken attribution create false confidence. AI Max Search will not fix bad measurement. It will optimise harder against it.

What advertisers should do next

  1. List every campaign using ACA or campaign-level broad match. In Google Ads, filter Search campaigns by Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match. Export the list with campaign name, bid strategy, conversion goals, landing page and current CPA or ROAS. That becomes your upgrade risk register.
  2. Snapshot search terms before the change. Pull the last 30 and 90 days of search terms for affected campaigns. Tag brand, competitor, high-intent non-brand, research, location and irrelevant terms. After the upgrade, compare spend mix by tag, not just total conversions.
  3. Audit conversion goals campaign by campaign. Remove soft actions from bidding where they distort value. Newsletter sign-ups, engaged sessions, page views and weak form fills should not sit beside qualified leads or purchases unless they carry values that reflect real business worth.
  4. Rewrite landing pages that feed poor copy. ACA and text customisation draw from your site. If a page has vague claims, outdated offer copy or mixed audiences, fix the page before Google uses it as creative fuel. Tighten headings, proof points, pricing language and service area wording.
  5. Add negative keyword controls before the system expands. Build shared negative lists for jobs, free, DIY, definition, template, wholesale, cheap and unrelated locations where they do not fit your offer. Do not wait for spend to prove the obvious.
  6. Segment test campaigns by value, not by convenience. If one campaign holds high-margin and low-margin products, split it. If one lead-gen campaign holds enterprise and consumer intent, split it. AI Max Search needs cleaner commercial signals than legacy Search because it has more room to act on them.

Document the upgrade settings against your original report. Search Engine Land’s report on the AI Max auto-upgrade sets out that ACA campaigns receive search term matching and text customisation, while campaign-level broad match campaigns receive search term matching. Use that as your checklist when the account changes.

Then cross-check Google’s own documentation. The official AI Max for Search campaigns guide explains the AI Max features, and Google’s automatically created assets support page sets out how ACA generates additional ad assets. If your live settings do not match your pre-upgrade intent, change them before the next budget cycle.

What this means for your campaigns

AI Max Search is another step away from Search as a keyword-only channel and towards Search as a signal-led auction system. That is not automatically bad. It is bad for accounts where campaign structure, tracking and creative inputs are already untidy.

The advertisers who win from this change will not be the ones who accept every automated setting. They will be the ones who decide which campaigns deserve expansion, which conversion goals deserve bidding weight, and which landing pages are safe for creative customisation. Treat the upgrade as a forced audit of paid search quality.

If you are unsure how exposed your campaigns are, a free Google Ads audit will surface the practical gaps quickly. For related reading on how automated matching is reshaping bidding, see our take on the Target CPA and ROAS split in paid search.

Frequently asked questions

Which campaigns are being auto-upgraded to AI Max Search?

Eligible Search campaigns using Automatically Created Assets or the campaign-level broad match setting are being moved into AI Max Search. ACA campaigns get search term matching and text customisation. Campaign-level broad match campaigns get search term matching.

Is AI Max Search bad for advertisers?

No. AI Max Search is risky when the account has weak tracking, mixed-intent campaigns, poor negatives or unclear landing pages. With clean conversion data and tight structure, it gives Google better signals to find useful additional demand.

What should UK advertisers check first?

Start by exporting every affected campaign, then audit conversion goals, search terms, negative keyword lists, landing page copy and bid strategy targets. Fix those inputs before judging the upgrade on CPA or ROAS.

Will existing ads and settings stay the same?

Google says the upgrade is designed to preserve behaviour closely by applying AI Max settings that mirror current configurations. Advertisers still need to verify the live settings because search term matching and text customisation change how the campaign can expand.

How soon should advertisers act?

Act before the upgrade reaches the account. Pull a 30 and 90 day baseline now, record current settings, and build a post-upgrade comparison so any query drift or creative change is visible quickly.
